Younger Futhark Belt

The Younger Futhark is the rune system of the Viking Age, used across Scandinavia from around the 8th to 12th century. With only 16 runes, it is a simplified yet powerful script found on stones, weapons, and everyday objects.
This belt buckle is a bronze replica of an original Ostrogothic buckle with eagle motif, dated to 500–700 AD. The source object, preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was made in Crimea and originally executed in silver with garnets.
The original belongs to the material culture of the early medieval period and formed part of a high-status dress ensemble, worn at the waist together with brooches and additional personal ornaments. Its construction combines plate, loop, and tongue in a compact and highly defined form centered around the eagle design.

For this version, OLD-NORSE has recreated the piece in bronze as a wearable replica, preserving the distinctive proportions and character of the historical model. The result carries forward the visual language of early medieval metalwork through a form grounded in archaeological precedent.
